Abstract:

A simple kinematic model is proposed to determine the locally buckled shape of the compressive flange plate of I-sections subjected to pure bending or bending combined with axial thrust. This kinematic model combined with an interaction equation for the capacity of a section of the compressive flange plate is used to determine the reduced axial capacity of locally buckled flange plate. Based on this reduced axial capacity of compressive flange plate, the moment capacity for the I-section for given values of curvature and axial load is computed to trace the moment-curvature curves for I-sections subjected to various values of axial thrusts.
