Abstract:

The cantilever columns and portal frames are studied by using the notional horizontal force design concept. This concept intends to eliminate K-factor in the frame design. It was found that the notional horizontal force concept is a useful means to simplify tremendously the design procedures of steel frames but can not take place of K-factor perfectly for all the type of frames.
