Abstract:

The limit states analysis of masonry arches, heretofore used only for the analysis of hinging mechanisms within the arch ring, is shown to have wider applicability. Lower and upper bounds may be obtained for collapse loads involving sliding at joints or at the abutments of a masonry arch, and combinations of hinging and sliding. The theorems of shakedown limit analysis make it possible to determine lower and upper bounds to the dynamic loads which may initiate an incremental collapse mechanism.
