Abstract:

Based on the theory of variable structure system (VSS) or sliding mode control (SMC), discontinuous control methods are presented for application to seismic-excited nonlinear civil engineering structures. The method of direct output feedback is also investigated. Numerical simulation results indicate that the control methods presented are effective and robust with respect to structural uncertainties.
