Abstract:

The nominal moment capacity of laterally unsupported, doubly-symmetric, steel I-beams are computed and compared using the AISC-LRFD and EC 3 design recommendations. A review of the EC 3 specification shows that these design recommendations provide a consistent and unified method for treatment of local-lateral interaction buckling modes for doubly-, singly-, and non-symmetric sections, compared to the AISC-LRFD recommendations. It is suggested that similar design guidelines may also be developed in the United States by incorporating the AISI-LRFD design recommendations for local buckling in the AISC-LRFD design recommendations for lateral buckling.
