Lunar ISRU: An Evolutionary Approach

by John L. Paterson, NASA,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Engineering, Construction, and Operations in Space IV

Abstract:

The goal of this paper is to provide the reader with a vision of the individual steps required to bring ISRU from the current technological readiness level of lab experimentation, to large scale production. The ultimate goal would be the ability to produce as much He3 as demand will allow, when nuclear fusion technology matures sufficiently to warrant it. What follows are discrete payloads that fit well within what were the current plans of Artemis, the Common Lunar Lander and FLO, the First Lunar Outpost.
