Abstract:

The advantages and disadvantages of three basic space station designs are discussed. These designs are a zero-gravity can like Skylab, a tethered system, and the wheel. A design of a wheel space station is presented. The station has a diameter of 400 feet with a 30 foot diameter tube for people occupied space. The usable floor space is approximately 69,000 square feet and is subjected to a simulated gravity equal to two-thirds of Earth's gravity. We found no flaws in the wheel space station concept and designed a workable station without depending on new technology or any exotic materials.
