Abstract:

An Automated People Mover (APM) is an advanced transportation system in which automated driveless vehicles operate on fixed guideways in exclusive rights-of-way. These differ from other forms of transit in that no operators are required on board the vehicles. This feature, together with the relatively small size of vehicles, make it possible to provide a high level of service throughout the day either through more frequent service or service in direct response to passenger requests. Currently, there are almost seventy systems of various types and configurations in the world and several systems are being planned. This paper provides an introduction to APM systems and their applications.
