Abstract:

Over the past two decades, the emphasis in road safety engineering has been on crash reduction through the development of remedial measures at high frequency sites. Road and traffic authorities in several nations are now turning towards crash prevention - ensuring that the design of new road and traffic schemes is as safe as practicable. This process is becoming known as road safety audit. This paper presents an overview of road safety audit, including its historical development, applications, processes and procedures, and its effects.
