Database for Pipeline Bridges in North America

Abstract:

Work began in 1985 at Wayne State University on a research study of pipeline suspension bridges. This effort, which was funded by ANR Pipeline Company of Detroit, Michigan, investigated four existing bridges under dynamic wind and seismic loading. As an extension of this research, a database for pipeline suspension bridges in North America is being developed. This general-purpose database, which presently includes 52 fields of design information per bridge, currently contains data on 14 of the longest pipeline suspension bridges in the United States and Canada. The potential applications for the information in the database include: replacement cost estimating for existing pipeline suspension bridges, finite-element modeling and dynamic analysis of existing bridges, evaluation of existing bridges in the design of new pipeline bridges, extrapolation of previous wind and earthquake analysis results to other bridges, and evaluation of existing bridges for possible wind or seismic retrofitting.
