Local Scour Measurements at Bridge Piers in Alberta

Abstract:

A summary of local pier scour data collected by Alberta Transportation and Utilities (AT & U) over the past 30 years is presented. Several methods used to gather this data are described. These measurements, along with other published field data, are compared to the results of some recent local scour prediction formulae based on laboratory data. In general, measured scour depths are less than predicted. Possible reasons for this discrepancy are discussed.
