Abstract:

A continuing program to measure river bed scour near bridge piers and abutments on the Alberta rivers has been on going for over thirty years. The objectives are to verify the existing formulae or develop new design criteria for scour prediction on both sand and gravel bed rivers. A number of priority bridge sites throughout the province have been selected on the basis of river characteristics, bridge configuration, and accessibility; and when a flood is forecast every effort is made to undertake surveys to quantify the flood hydraulics and measure the pertinent scour characteristics.
