Abstract:

This report describes the equations used in the People's Republic of China for estimating scour depth at bridge structures. The equations were worked out from model and field data at the Symposium on Scour at Bridge Crossings of China in 1964 and were used in highway and railway engineering for more than 20 years. Recently, Gao and Xu (1989) proposed modifications and improvements in the equations based on research carried out at the Xian Highway Transportation University. These modified equations have been introduced into the `Code of Investigation and Design of Highway Bridge Crossings' published by the Ministry of Communications, People's Republic of China, 1991.
