Abstract:

Engineering services are being provided for three bridge crossings, two over the Missouri River and the other over the Mississippi River. Scour consideration for the bridged waterways is a common concern and is included as one of the project tasks. This paper summarizes the process which we took in evaluating scour in accordance with state and federal directives for the three bridges. Hydrologic, geomorphologic, and hydraulic settings are different from site to site, and the existing information is available in various forms. Interpretation and judgement are required on the part of the engineer as is an understanding of the bridge history and subsurface conditions which prove indispensable for any work related to scour.
