Wetland Management in Britain: A Comparative Approach

by John Pethick, Univ of Hull, Hull, United Kingdom,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Abstract:

Wetland management in the United Kingdom is in an early stage of development. The importation of management aims and techniques from other countries with more advanced programmes is an attractive option but, due to the quite distinct environments involved, may lead to potential problems. The reconciliation of coastal defence and wildlife habitat conservation in UK is presently under debate and a policy of managed retreat appears likely to achieve both objectives within a holistic coastal management approach.
