Abstract:

Probabilistic tools to assist with the management of large water resource systems in South Africa were developed and applied during the last decade. Acceptance today is not only due to the sound theory underpinning the technique but also because of the methods deployed to communicate findings to decision makers and interested and affected parties, aided by a number of cases where decisions had led to substantial cost savings. A better understanding of the system by all had the added advantage of improving cooperation, even across borders.
