Abstract:

Laboratory and field studies were conducted to demonstrate that the azimuthal variation in electrical resistivity can be used to indicate the presence of cracks in clay systems. Laboratory measurements in which crack width and location relative to the electrode array were varied indicate that it is not generally possible to quantify the crack geometry. Field studies over a landfill cover liner indicate that cracks will open and close depending upon the state of saturation within the clay.
