Abstract:

Numerical simulations of contaminant transport in a stratified aquifer characterized by a self-similar distribution of hydraulic conductivity were performed. Macrodispersivities were calculated from the results of the numerical simulations using the plume spatial moments. The relationship between the variance and fractal dimension of hydraulic conductivity and the longitudinal macrodispersivity was investigated. Macrodispersivity was found to decrease with fractal dimension and to increase with standard deviation of hydraulic conductivity.
