IVHS: Applications in Freight and Trucking Operations

by Kenneth W. Ogden, Monash Univ, Clayton,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Pacific Rim TransTech Conference: Volume I: Advanced Technologies

Abstract:

This paper discusses the application of IVHS technology to freight and trucking activities. It is argued that because commercial vehicle operators perceive real benefits from IVHS, they are likely to be at the forefront of applications. IVHS has the potential to extend already-available EDI (electronic data interchange) systems to that portion of the logistics system which occurs on the road. IVHS applications to trucking are discussed under four heads: despatching and routing, regulation and administration, positioning and communication, and institutional factors. Potential benefits to road system managers are also discussed.
