Ecology of Gelendzhik Bay

Abstract:

Natural conditions of Gelendzhik bay and process of its ecological degradation during last year are described in this paper. The main flow of pollutants enters form the city and vineyards arranged on its coasts. Pesticides, mineral fertilizers, oil products, different organic combinations are poured out to the bay by storm water. Alga species composition becomes poor as a result of the bay pollution. In some areas of the bottom the benthos is completely obliterated. A project of the bay rescue has been elaborated. It includes the creation of gravel beaches which will cover groins and space between groins, and construction of deep storm water let out. Mentioned measures will improve the water exchange in the coastal zone and will decrease here the pollutant entering.
