Abstract:

Engineering databases can assist in management of massive amounts of design data involved in Architecture-Engineering and Construction (AEC) process. This data needs to be distributed for autonomy, performance and economic reasons ; however, an important problem of maintaining consistency between such databases arises. In this paper, we present a high-level constraint management mechanism that is powerful enough to express most of the cross-functional constraints relevant to AEC design process. The constraints are interdisciplinary and may deal with several design databases - architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and construction. Notifications are generated automatically as a result of constraint violations due to updates on the design databases. We also discuss some of the constraint management strategies important for a collaborative AEC design environment.
