Abstract:

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the results of applying techniques of information systems development to an application area that is diverse and complex but which is exploring the use of information systems at an early stage. The methodology followed is to use structured systems analysis techniques to define tendering data. These data are modeled using entity-relationship techniques. A database is implemented using a RDBMS and data from a recent tender. A primary result of the work is an entity-relationship model for construction tender data. Other results of using the database and testing it for flexibility in information retrieval show measured improvements in the flexibility of retrieval. This extra flexibility is demonstrated to be of use by professional working on construction projects in improving the information available to them.
