Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has completed its first effort to qualify existing data using NUREG-1298 'Qualification of Existing Data for High-Level Nuclear Waste Repositories'. A combination of three methods were used: corroboration, equivalent quality assurance program, and peer review. A technical assessment procedure was used to create the documentation to support the qualification process. The technical assessment team compared the procedures in place at the time of the original work to the procedures in use under an approved quality assurance program, the scientific notebooks that recorded the investigations, the geologic sample studied, and the records of a peer review conducted on one part of the work. The team recommended that the data be qualified. This recommendation was accepted by the DOE in September 1992.
