Abstract:

Criteria are developed for transmutation system impact on HLW storage that are related to intrusion and long-term risk reduction. Thermal reactor, fast reactor, and accelerator-driven, intense thermal neutron systems (characteristics of the Accelerator Transmutation of Waste (ATW) concept are analyzed in the context of this criteria. From this analysis, accelerator-driven intense thermal neutron systems appear uniquely suited for simultaneously achieving rapid transuranic actinide reductions and as well as having capabilities for transmuting a large fractions of long-lived fission products in high-level nuclear waste (HLW).
