Investigation of a Failed Concrete Joist System

by Stephen J. Sopko, Associate; Ryan-Biggs Associates, Troy, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structural Engineering in Natural Hazards Mitigation

Abstract:

The failure and distress of concrete joists contained in the promenade roof deck of a one-story, college, lecture hall building initiated an extensive investigation to determine the cause of the failure. Once the cause of failure was determined, a complicated repair method was used to reinforce the failed joists and other areas of the roof prone to a similar type of failure.
