Abstract:

In the first part of this paper, a review of the various types of geosynthetics is presented and it is indicated that all types of geosynthetics have been or can be used in dams to perform a variety of functions. Then, the various applications of geosynthetics in dam rehabilitation are described, and their design and construction are discussed. In the subsequent parts of the paper, a review is presented of dam rehabilitation involving the use of geosynthetics for drainage and filtration, erosion control, embankment improvement, and waterproofing. The durability of geosynthetics in dams is addressed in the last part of the paper. Numerous examples are given and an extensive list of references is provided.
