Abstract:

This paper describes the development of a prototype concept and demonstration for a geographical information system-transportation database (GIS/T) for the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) in Clark County, Nevada. The Purpose of the project was to develop a comprehensive regional transporation database integrated into the existing Clark County GIS in ARC/INFO. The project objectives were: Identify major data collection and database management issues. Identify regional transportation functions, data needs and GIS products. Develop a regional transporation database concept. Perform a demonstration of the application of the GIS/T in PC ARC/INFO. The paper discusses the general GIS/T concept and data communication flow between various agencies. Based on the GIS/T concept, a demonstration was developed to illustrate: 1) the geographical referencing system; 2) the joining of an external database to a 'windowed' subarea; and 3) the use of macro commands to display and plot attributes. The paper also presents recommendations to make the GIS-T concept operational on a regional scale including: 1) completing the regional transportation network coding in the GIS; 2) developing new GIS point covers; 3) programming new macro commands; and 4) developing standardized data reporting formats among the various agencies.
