Abstract:

To reject the claim that the use of accelerator in shotcrete reduces the compressive strength with time, lately cored samples were taken from an 18 to 19 years old concrete. A wet mixed concrete was placed in a tunnel lining, cylinders were cored from it and the density and compressive strengthg was determined. The compressive strengths obtained showed good quality. These results were compared with sawn cubes taken from the original sprayed concrete in 1972. The characteristic compressive strength grade of the cored cylinders was higher than the corresponding compressive strength of the cubes from 1972. This confirms the theory that the addition of accelerators to wet mixed shotcrete doe snot reduce the durability/compressive strength with time.
