Abstract:

This paper presents a life history of a marine steel sheet pile bulkhead, over 35 years old, that has been exposed to a salt water environment with minimal maintenance or repair in the intervening years. It discusses the structural integrity investigative process used to monitor safety and the various alternatives examined to repair the structure with the anticipated increase in useful life and the cost/benefit of each. It describes the process by which one serviceable element of the system was incorporated into the final structure through an innovative design.
