Abstract:

A probabilistic model is developed to evaluate the bearing capacity of shallow foundations. The bearing capacity formulation proposed by Terzaghi is used but with the bearing capacity factors and shape factors according to Vesic (1973). The spatial variabilities and the uncertainties resulting from the discrepancies between the laboratory measured and in-situ values of shear strength parameters are taken into consideration, along with the effects of modeling error and progressive failure.
