Quantifying Uncertainty in Site Characterization

Abstract:
The uncertainties in determining the true geologic conditions at the proposed high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada needed to be determined as part of the Exploratory Studies Facility Alternatives Study (ESF-AS). The uncertainties to be determined were defined and related by a probabilistic 'tree' called 'Nature's Tree,' which provides a relationship between the actual conditions at Yucca Mountain and what a site characterization program determines the conditions to be.
