Part of: Probabilistic Mechanics and Structural and Geotechnical Reliability

Abstract:

Redundancy of bridge structures and methods to evaluate redundancy are reviewed in this paper. A method to measure redundancy based on the existing theories of probability as related to structural safety and risk analysis is presented. The significance of the safety index in defining the level of redundancy is explained. Redundancy evaluation measures based on a change in the safety index before and after the occurrence of a partial damage to the system are presented and discussed.
