Abstract:

This study summarizes about three years of research effort related to active control of sliding structures to both harmonic and strong earthquake type motions. This is the first time such experimental and analytical studies were conducted on actively controlled pure friction (P-F) based structures so that simplified design guides could be formulated for use in actual design. One of the objectives is to find the dynamic characteristics of a hybrid system so that stable performance results near its natural frequency, especially for low mass-ratio structures. The dynamic properties of Teflon were evaluated from a seperate experiment on a rigid mass vibrating system at varying pressure.
