Abstract:

The Kawaihae shallow-draft harbor site is located on the northwest coast of the island of Hawaii, HI. An entrance channel, turning basin, and breakwater currently exist at the harbor site. This study was conducted to develop an optimal design plan which satisfies the Headquarters, US Army Corps of Engineers (HQUSACE) criteria for providing adequate harbor protection from the incident wave climate. Two design plans with structural modifications were developed by POD. Deepwater wave conditions were established and transformed to the Kawaihae vicinity. The transformed conditions were used to evaluate the wave response of the proposed design plans. A total of five configurations were tested. Two configurations met the HQUSACE criteria for adequate harbor protection. This paper presents the procedures and results of the study.
