Design and Construction of Boat Launching Ramps

by Bill Curry, California Dept of Boating and, Waterways, Sacramento, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: World Marina '91

Abstract:

Although boat launching ramps are not 'high tech' facilities compared to many other types of waterfront construction, there is a continuing void of knowledge, experience, ability and confidence among both designers and contractors as how best to design and construct a first rate boat launching ramp. In an effort to fill that void in at least some small measure, this paper presents nine basic design and construction elements to be used in the development of boat launching ramps that are functional, durable and safe. The information has been developed over the past thirty years by California Department of Boating and Waterways staff, and represents the collective wisdom of boaters, harbormasters, concrete technicians, material suppliers, designers, engineers, consultants, government officials, and various other persons representing both public and private interests.
