The Application of a Structural Analysis Program to Floating Dock and Guide Pile Design

Abstract:

The floating dock systems and guide piles used in marinas are often designed using over simplified analysis techniques. However, if the dock system is flexible or if either the soil conditions or water depths vary within the marina basin, then a detailed analysis is required to ensure no dock component or guide pile will be overstressed under the design loading condition. Moffatt and Nichol, Engineers uses a commercially available structural analysis computer program to perform such analyses. Review of the results yields valuable insight into the interaction of guide piles and flexible floating docks.
