Abstract:

While computer implementations of the procedures for evaluating the operation of traffic signalized intersections are receiving widespread use, these implementations are still primarily analysis as opposed to design tools. Consequently, the user must apply them iteratively, while recording the input data between iterations, in order to perform a search for optimized designs of new signal timing plans. This paper presents an illustration of the Signal Expert approach to the analysis and design of signal timing plans, which can fully optimize these plans during a single execution of the program from a single user input data file. While the model was initially designed for use in Canada, this paper demonstrates the very practical benefits of also applying this new model in conjuction with the U.S. Highway Capacity Manual.
