Redondo Beach Thermal Study

by Francis E. Sargent, Waterways Experiment Station, Vicksburg, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

Thermal tests were conducted in a 3D physical model of Redondo Beach King Harbor to simulate power plant cooling water intake and discharge into the harbor. Tests were conducted to determine whether proposed modifications to the harbor breakwaters would adversely affect heat distribution within the harbor. Tests simulated up to 2 days of cooling water circulation for existing conditions and proposed plan. Results from the 2 day tests showed a rise of up to 1 degree C within the harbor for the proposed plan. Absolute rise at the discharge point was only 4 percent above existing conditions.
