Abstract:

A study is underway to develop an improved understanding of the 3-D flow pattern at 90° diversions. The main goal is to explain, via the velocity distribution, the behavior of sediment transport in the vicinity of a diversion, in particular the formation of sand bars, which is an acute problem at many power plant water intakes. Velocity data obtained in a laboratory set-up are presented and discussed.
