Abstract:

In this paper, the observed bed forms for six different reaches of the Nile River in Egypt are described. The purpose of the study is to inquire whether or not the different available formulae for bedform prediction can be applied to the Nile River. The Athoullah and Van Rijn relations for bedform prediction are valid for the Nile, while the formulae of Simons and Richardson and Liu and Albertson et al. gave fair estimates. In the Nile, the average dune height is approximately 10 percent of the water depth. A graphical relation between the dune height and its length has been determined.
