Abstract:

This case study describes the retrofitting of a turn-of-the-century powerhouse with modern turbine/generator equipment. The structure consists of numerous turbine bays separated by massive concrete sidewalls. One of the technical challenges was to arrange new equipment to minimize costly structural modifications. Retrofitted equipment arrangement was limited to the existing powerhouse physical parameters. Propeller type rim-drive turbines were selected, partly due to their compact nature and their versatility in generator connection. To fully utilize restricted space, tandem turbines were connected to a single generator.
