Evaluating Hydro Project Benefits with the POWRSYM Production Cost Model

Abstract:

The contribution that a hydro peaking project or pumped-storage project makes to reducing system operating costs can be determined only by modeling the project's operation in the power system. This paper describes POWRSYM, a chronological hourly production cost model that is well-suited to the evaluation of peaking projects. Several different ways of simulating hydro projects are described, as well as a number of studies where POWRSYM was used.
