Abstract:

The paper proposes a standard control concept for double regulated small and medium hydro turbines. The concept is based on minimum protection requirements for safe and reliable quick and emergency shut-downs as well as load rejections. Considering different runner blade manoeuvres and their timing, results of load rejection, emergency shut-down and load step response calculations are presented to support the stipulated advantages of opening the runner blades during transient operation modes. In conclusion simplified control concepts are proposed taking full advantage of the facts that it makes little sense to attribute a shut-off function to the runner blades and that their timing influences insignificantly the transient behaviour of the turbine.
