Abstract:

Mines in the world are continually descending to greater depths in the search of mineral deposits. Water and energy usage are crucial to expansion. To help deal with this problem, Freeport Indonesia, Inc. tapped a glacier and incorporated a high head Pelton turbine hydropower plant 590 meters underground in a very remote copper minesite in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. This successful venture has allowed the copper mine to bring power to where it is needed along with major expansion due to redirection of water to a functional destination.
