Abstract:

In 1986, the Electric Power Research Institute asked Decision Focus to develop a new planning model to quantify the dynamic operating benefits of power technologies that offer operating flexibility. The paper reports on this new model, DYNAMICS. DYNAMICS provides improved solutions for the operation of power systems. It helps planners to make improved technology choice decisions by calculating typically overlooked benefits. It helps engineers evaluate and compare different design options, performance characteristics and plant modification alternatives. DYNAMICS helps R&D groups assess the benefits of various R&D programs. The paper illustrates how the dynamic operating costs and benefits are calculated.
