Abstract:

'Ria' is the Spanish name for a sea flooded valley, whatever its origin and evolution. This paper discusses a project involving the regeneration and protection of beaches and the lessening of the process of filling of the interior of a ria, but subordinating the latter to the former. In the solution a dredging of the inside shoals of the ria for nourishment of the outside beaches had been designed, but some problems arose involving the actual volumes of dredged sand. Sediment budgets have been developed for the ria inside and outside the barrier. The methodology used for this determination is discussed in the paper.
