Abstract:

This proceedings, Coastal Sediments '91, contains more than 180 full papers delivered at a specialty technical conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers held on June 25-27, 1991 in Seattle, Washington. The conference dealt with the physical aspects of sediment processes in the coastal environment and had as its subtitle Symposium on Quantitative Approaches to Coastal Sediment Processes. The papers are presented under three general themes: fundamentals of coastal sediment transport, coastal geologic processes, and engineering applications. The topics of the role of long waves in coastal sediment processes and cross-shore transport are highlighted. Examples of the topics covered include: 1) Sediment transport; 2) beach and nearshore sedimentation; 3) shoreline and beach profile changes; 4) longshore and cross-shore transport; 5) storm erosion; 6) inlet sediment processes; 7) gravel transport; 8) coastal structure and sediment interaction; and 9) dredging. These and other phenomena are examined in peer-reviewed papers describing basic approaches, numerical and physical models, analytical techniques, instrumentation and field measurement projects, case studies, and general methodologies.
