Abstract:

A sediment budget was developed for the Santa Barbara and Ventura County shoreline in Southern California as part of an overall coastal planning effort. The budget was analyzed primarily by estimating the relevant sediment sources and sinks, quantifying shoreline erosion rates, and calculating the variation of alongshore transport over the study area. The results indicate that budget deficits may exist at three areas. The most significant finding is the prediction of future shoreline erosion in Ventura County related to a reduction in sediment supply from a major fluvial sand source.
