Abstract:

A prediction formula is derived for the suspended sediment transport rate in coastal regions when the current speed and/or wave orbital velocity is large. It is based on generalised forms for the vertical distributions of eddy viscosity and diffusivity. Initial tests of the formula against field data give reasonable agreement. Because of the emphasis on strong flows, the method is well suited to long-term predictions of sediment transport, for which these events make large contributions.
