Abstract:

This article presents a review of previous studies about the environment in Recife, the historical development of the city, and the programs currently in progress with regard to coastal zone management. Although the available data (especially tidal data) is not sufficient to guarantee a trend in sea level, there is some degree of awareness about the importance of the subject. Possible impacts and responses are discussed. A series of recommendations is presented concerning the establishment of basic programs which could allow policy makers to make decisions regarding responses to sea level changes.
